Get to know Paul Colman! (July 2002)
| |
|
|
1. Where is your hometown? I was born in London but
have spent most of my time in Melbourne, Australia. 2. Who are some of your musical
influences? I have been influenced by singer/songwriters from
just about every genre and era of popular music: Dylan, Springsteen, Don
McLean, Joni Mitchell, Crowded House, U2, Radiohead, Larry Norman, Steve
Taylor, you name it.
|
 |
3. What's currently in your CD player? U2 - All
That You Can't Leave Behind, John Mayer, Bebo Norman's pre-release (awesome),
Midnight Oil - Capricornia, Newsboys - Thrive. 4.
What is your music
background/history? My Dad was in
musical theatre, so music was always around. I started my first band at 11 and
by age 18 had written 100 songs (all pretty bad). I have been a singing pirate,
a wedding singer, a solo/acoustic singer, a pub singer, a choir director and
participant. I have always been committed to trying to be a good songwriter and
entertainer. Therefore much of my musical education has been listening to songs
and trying to learn the craft as well as performing a lot.

5.
Who are some artists you admire?
U2, Neil Finn, Midnight Oil, Springsteen,
Peter Furler, Third Day and Larry Norman 6. What song do you wish you would have
written?
"Walk On" by U2.
7. How does the music scene in
Australia differ from the U.S.?
For starters there actually is a music scene in the U.S.!!! The USA is bigger,
more professional, more festivals, etc. The Aussie Christian music scene is
filled with amazing people and talented artists, but unfortunately we just
don't have the population to sustain a strong industry. |

8.
Any good stories about your move to
U.S.? We have amazing people surrounding
us who have worked so hard to help us assimilate, and that has been awesome.
Our visas took forever to come through, and so the 10 days we were going to
spend finding accommodations and transport in Nashville were spent in New
Zealand killing time. When we finally did arrive, we were picked up by our tour
bus at the airport and taken straight to soundcheck for the Third Day tour. On
the opening night of the tour, we felt like kissing the concrete beneath our
feet in Greensboro, NC. We love the USA and its people, and we are thrilled to
be here. |
9.
What is the funniest thing that's happened on stage or
at a pc3 show: Recently at the
Ryman Theatre in Nashville in front of thousands of industry people and after
being introduced by Jars of Clay, we had a technical problem and Phil, our
drummer and tech guru, looked at me as if to say "do what you can to stall." I
thought "here we go" and so to kill some time, I lead everyone in "If you're
happy and you know it clap your hands." I turned to Phil after a few rounds of
the song and he gave me the thumbs down, so then we all sang "In The Jungle"
with the men doing the high falsetto bit. Still thumbs down from Phil so out
came the old trusty "Kumbaya My Lord" and then wham Phil plays the intro to
"Turn" and everyone jumps to their feet and off we go.

New Map of the World |
|
10. What are some of your favorite songs on New Map Of The
World and Why? I love "Let Love
Grow" because it is such a powerful cry for redemption and reconciliation, and
it just lifts my spirit every time I hear it. I love "Lullaby" because it is a
salvation song as well as a lyric about the mixture of suffering, repentance
and worship. I love "The Killing Tree," as it is the story of my own salvation,
when I knelt for the first time at the cross of Jesus and asked Him to forgive
me and heal me. |
 Greg and Paul at
GMA 2002 (Am I really that tall?) |
 |
11. What was it like being out on tour with Third
Day? Amazing. We played to 259,000
people in our first 3 months in the USA and the 3D guys have been astoundingly
supportive and we are proud to call them friends. They are amazing artists and
people. |
12.
What is the mission/purpose of
pc3? Matt 22:37-40 To love God with
all we have and to love each other and everyone else. If saving people is your
goal, what are you going to do in heaven or if you are with people on earth who
already know Him? If loving God and others is the goal and mission, then
everything, including seeing people saved, comes under that. After all, this is
what Jesus said when asked what is the most important thing. So we're sticking
with Jesus. |
13.
Anything else you like to share with your
fans? Don't try and be a Christian
or worry about or talk about Christianity. These words have become ambiguous in
our society and from my experience, they seem to set up more walls than they
erode. My thought is talk about JESUS and say you follow Him. Christianity is
not the message: Jesus is the message! Ask people who they think Jesus is, not
whether they are Christians. |
